Bicara Kemaafan dan Bulan

biar bulan bicara -

Terpesona la pulak pada versi ini. Entah siapa penyanyinya.

Manisnya.

alang

There's something special about 'alang'. Not the person, but the word. SO far, this is the only word (that I've thought of) that can be combined with the most letters to make other words. Can you find others (i.e. words with two or more syllables) like it?

Alang
Balang
Calang
Dalang
Galang
Halang
Jalang
Kalang
Lalang
Malang
Palang
Salang
Talang
Walang

Cari Kerja

There are loads of sign of the worsening world economy. Apparently, Malaysia is not spared despite what some politicians (mis)said. One sign that was publicised widely is the severe unemployment in Kedah. There was ONE opening for a job in a hilly area. The previous job holder quit due to work-related stress. Despite the severity of the stress, there are still a lot of people clamoring to get the job. How desperate they must be.

As of the official deadline of job application, there were 15 people offering themselves for the job. They have until 7th April to impress their prospective bosses. I'm sure now they're making rounds for interviews. Or, perhaps, behaving like a peacock, showing off their plumage to distract from their flaws (e.g. the fact that they can't fly is one big flaw)

I like to see these candidates actually being INTERVIEWED by the people who are going to employ them. They should be asked why they think they are qualified for the job. Why should they be trusted with the job? What are their KPI's? Let the bosses dictate the interviewing process. Let the bosses grill them so that an informed-decision can be made. Don't be satisfied with 'advertisements' or PR exercises that the candidates put on show. Hey, if they want the job, they must be prepared to listen to the people's questions and concerns.

Do you think they'd want to come to a 'Temuduga Perdana' arranged by the people?

The making of..

.. telur masin.

I've added another thing into my 'have done' list. My neighbour bought some duck eggs. Conversations led to salted duck eggs. Apparantly, they are quite expensive here. So, I volunteered that mak use to make salted eggs. And guess who's given the task (read opportunity) to make salted eggs.

I've never done it before. However, after consulting the internet, I thought that it wasn't a difficult procedure. I went to Tesco to get a glass jar. Boiled some water, waited till it cooled before adding salt to the point of saturation. Then I soak the eggs in the brine. Now, have patience because the eggs need at least two weeks to get salty.

Two weeks later, I boiled one of them to test for taste. It was salty enough without inducing a fear of high blood pressure. That's the beauty of preparing food yourself. You can control the level of input into your food. So, now I know how to prepare salted eggs.

Chasing after oneself

The chasing after the NHS contacts were finally coming to an end. Alhamdulillah, I've submitted my ethics application the the NHS Research Ethics Committee (REC) and NHS R&D. Months of chasing for approval and signature has come to an end. The next big thing is the REC review on 6th April 2009. It would feel like a viva voce, or proposal defence, as Mike (my lab mate) concurred with me.

Now that chasing other people had ended, the focus shifted to myself. I have to chase myself! There are a number of things that had been delayed. One of the biggest is fixing a date for a driving practical test. After passing the theory test, I've dilly dallied taking the practical test. Finally, I caught up with myself. The test has been booked for 29th April 2009. I have a month to prepare for it. I hope I will keep running and not lagged behind.

Peluang vs kesempatan

I was chatting with Ray the other day when the subject of peluang vs kesempatan came up. Semantically, they may mean more or less the same. However, in application, they can be vastly different thing. The moral, financial and social connotations are distinguishable.

Some people say that 'good luck' is simply preparation meeting opportunity. In this sense, taking a 'peluang' is something very positive. In fact, it should be encouraged. Otherwise, all those preparation would go to naught. Sometimes, people are hesitant to take the opportunity for fear of 'succeeding'. Quite an ironic fear. Success brings one into an unchartered territory. 'Failure' or 'status quo' are more familiar, thus less threathening. So, no wonder people who takes opportunities tend to be revered as heroic. Not everybody would be willing to stare success squarely. You'd have to be brave to dare to succeed.

More important, we must be well prepared. Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to do anything once an opportunity presents itself. We'd let the good things pass us by. That would be unfortunate, or bad luck, indeed.

On the other hand, taking a 'kesempatan' is like conning into grabbing an potentially beneficial situation without plans or well made intentions. More often than not, 'kesempatan' is taken at the expanse of another person. Your gain is another person's loss. In contrast, taking an opportunity is more likely to be a win-win situation. So, better be prepared to reap mutual benefits.

Euro

Errmmm..... bila nak ke Europe lagi nih? Pound sterling makin lama makin turun nilai berbanding Euro.
Tapi, law is law. Bukannya cukup handal nak melawan. Terbantutla hasrat ke pantai... untuk kesekian kalinya

Proofread vs Writing

Encik encik, tuan tuan, puan puan, ya maulana,

Ana bukannya offer servis menulis. Ana sekadar membaca, menyemak dan membetul. Ana bukan penulis. Kalau mau ana menulis, cakap siang2. Boleh ana refer kepada Persekutuan Liga Antarabangsa Gempur Informasi Antara Tulisan (PLAGIAT). Sheikh... apa yang anta mau ana buat sebenarnya?

Soalan Statistik

Komen.
1) Ok.
2) Yea la tu... teman percaya sangat dengan jawapan tu. Guna statistik boleh le buat statement macam tu. Mike bior bebenor.

Hari ni tergerak nak cari lagu ni di imeem. Ada la pulak. Bila dengar lagu ni, mesti teringat kat (pakcik) Epon, kawan sekelas dulu. Mula2 dengar lagu ni masa dia nyanyikan. Jadi suka lagu ni, regardless of its morbid nuance,  disebabkan versi live Epon. Itu masa sebelum SPM. Beberapa tahun lepas, bila dua2 dah jadi bapak budak, ada berjumpa masa raya. Bila buat request, Epon nyanyikan lagu ni. Layannnn. Thank you Epon.

Setahun lepas, aku berjinak-jinak dgn NVivo 7. Sue menggalakkan aku mengguna NVivo. Dia yg cadangkan aku bantu dia mengajar NVivo kepada pelajar2 dia. Aku bantu sesi makmal. Bukan banyak sangat kerjanya pun.

Hu hu... up sket tahap pengajarannya. Bila baca email jemputan tu, rasa macam mimpi. Moi? Talking in front of these brilliant group of people? Rasa macam tak percaya. Tak sangka. Buah cempedak menjadi nangka. Belacan mengajar keju. Muahahaha

Kabus pagi

Last week, two of the days started with heavy fog. One of them, the fog was so heavy that visibility was sharply reduced. It is on this morning that I recorded these pictures. In the quiet and chilly morning, the air was thick. It was scary and magical at the same time. It was a fantastic time to take a walk.

Peak District

Peak District
Originally uploaded by pak alang

The trip to Peak District had several 'wow' moments. One of my favorite view is Wynatt's Pass. The geological formation is just awesome. I wanted to conquer this area, but my efforts were thwarted by strong chilly wind. Furthermore, the foggy conditions made photography a very challenging task. I had my sour grape with Wynatt's Pass.

On the way back, I took the Snake's Pass. Again, I was simply wowwed by the hillside. Unfortunately, there's no photo to show. I didn't find appropriate place to stop and take pictures. Perhaps, now that I know the plac a bit, I can plan better the next time I go there.

Seloka Kempen Pilihanraya

Seloka - Normadiah & Aziz Jaafar

Would any campaigner use a version of this song in the upcoming by-elections?

Versi asal:

Encik lah Embong Melaka anak Melaka
tanam peria lah pantai di tepi pantai
janganlah sombong berkata abang berkata
adakah buaya lah bangkai menolak bangkai

Versi Pilihanraya:

Encik lah Embong Melaka anak Melaka
tanam peria lah rumah di tepi rumah
janganlah sombong berkata abang berkata
adakah buaya lah 'sedekah' menolak 'sedekah'

Rasuah tak sama dengan sedekah, ok! Ingat tu. Jangan terima 'sedekah' pilihanraya.

Paperwork

A Saturday in Worcester

Last Saturday, I went to Worcester, about 80 miles from Loughborough. I went to visit Sam, who was packing up to go back to Malaysia. In the morning, we went hiking up Malvern Hill.

It was very windy at the top of Malvern Hill. You can see Sam's hair being blown by the wind.

I believe this view is in the direction of Conventry. It was too bad that the sky wasn't clearer and brighter when I was taking this pic.

I had an opportunity to describe my PhD research to Sam. An air ambulance arrived when we were resting at the peak. Someone fell and needed to be transported to a hospital. An ambulance (Honda CRV) arrived with a paramedic and a technician (I think) before the helicopter touched down. Many people took out their camera to snap the heli. Not to disrespect the patient. He was, afterall, fully conscious. Hope he's recovering well.

Marissa Zahra. Bertuah la mak bapak dia ni. Nak tido senang.

Sam kata, dah dua tahun dia cuba keluarkan. Rezeki aku nak keluarkan bola tu sebelum Sam balik Malaysia. Pas tu, tak reti nak masukkan balik. Kena tunggu lagi dua tahun kot.

I had a really good time in Worcester. The hiking trip was excellent. The food even more so. I've never tried mussels cooked on a grill. They tasted fresh and sweet. Got to try them again.

Destinasi Cinta

Destinasi Cinta - Mestica

I didn't pay much attention to Mestica before. However, one day, listening to songs on imeem, I came upon this song. It tugged at my heart instantly. And what an appropriate song for me this week. I pray I will reach the destination that I'm pining for.

Good Bye Romeo

If I were at hope, I'd be laughing aloud when listening to this song. Alas, I was in my office. Bravo Salih Yaacob. This is the kind of song that I'm thinking about when I penned the translation of Aci-Aci Buka Pintu the other day.
