Temuduga Perdana

Satu jawatan
lima belas orang calon

Ada yang ingin
merebut
merampas
mempertahan
atau sekadar teringin

Parah benar ekonomi
agaknya
sehingga sebegini ramai pemohon
untuk satu jawatan ini
agaknya
parah benar fikrah

Baiklah
silalah datang berjumpa bakal majikan
datang dengan sopan
usah bertempik mencerca nista
kalian menghadiri temuduga perdana

Yang akan memilih, itulah majikan
mereka berhak membelek tepi kain kalian
kalau-kalau ada kurap dan daki korupsi
usah berdegar-degar mengigal bagai merak gatal
bulu berkilau hanya iklan
terbangnya tidak, berjela-jela terpalit najis sendiri

Cubalah perbanyakkan mendengar
tingginya harapan dan jangkaan
usah gatal lidah mengocak emosi mengapi-api

Cubalah perbanyakkan melihat
buruknya kusut dan keliru
usah gatal badan mengorak kelibat menunjuk hebat

Cubalah perbanyakkan merasa
mualnya berita dan rencana
usah gatal tangan menyuap memasang umpan

Ini temuduga perdana
tundukkan diri tunjukkan akhlak
kerana kalian yang berkehendakkan kerja
jangan cemarkan temuduga perdana

Tikam Saja

Tikam saja
bilah yang bercabang itu
benamkan di mana-mana
yang kau suka

sementara marahmu masih ada
jadikan ia tenaga
buat menghunus dan melibas
melepas geram
tikam saja

* * *

Hunus mana yang berniat tulus?
Libasan mana yang menegak keadilan?
Gegar mana yang mencari benar?

* * *

Yang kau tikam aku
yang robek jatidirimu

Yang kau libas aku
yang carik tenagamu

Yang kau gegar aku
yang goyah pendirianmu

* * *

Silalah tikam lagi
bila marahmu kembali.

Haruskah rasa gembira?

Apa kemahuan, apa kehendak. Mengapa memanjangkan tempur, mengapa tiba-tiba berundur.

Apakah ketentuan ini baik? Untuk siapa?

I pray all the best for you. Whatever happens, may you be protected by Him, forever.

Hari kaciwa

Semalam memang mendukacitakan. Disappointed.

First, poster yang dipertandingkan tak dapat menang apa2 hadiah. Ada sepuluh hadiah, tapi tak layak. Bukan le nak sangat kat hadiah tu... tapi teringin nak dapat pengiktirafan hasil kerja. It was not meant to be. Tak pe la. Janji kerja dah siap.

Pakcik Ivan jadi penguji. Dia nampak okay je. Malangnya, tak lulus ujian disebabkan memandu melebihi had laju. Ingatkan jalan tu ada limit 40mph, rupa2nya 30mph je. Hampeh. Maka, bergandalah kaciwa pada hari itu.

Sedey.

Syarat tanpa syarat

Pas sepatutnya tidak meletakkan syarat tertentu jika ikhlas mahu merealisasikan kerjasama kerajaan perpaduan dengan Barisan Nasional (BN).
"Syarat kita, mereka perlu ikhlas dan jangan letakkan sebarang syarat, Pemuda sedia bertindak proaktif dan berbincang jika mereka jujur dan ikhlas." (Utusan Malaysia, 29 April 2009).

Conference in London

For the second time in as many years, I volunteered for the Ergonomics Society's Annual Conference. This year is extra special as the Society is celebrating its 60th anniversary. The venue chosen for the conference is the Royal College of Physicians, near Regent's Park. A beautiful venue indeed.

This time around, the physical work was less. Much praise should go to Sue Hull and her team for organising a lot - and i mean A LOT - before the start of the conference. When the volunteers arrived, the registration desk was more or less ready to accept delegates.

Overall, I enjoyed being a volunteer at this conference. On the academic side, I managed to link Situational Leadership to Lean Management based on Ken Catchpole's presentation. I think that is one good way to demonstrate the link between psychology and ergonomics.

This is the Secretariat team. From left: Lauren, Nick, Dave, Lisa, Sue, Ed, Thomas, Nora, Gerry, and yours truly.

This is the view in one of the parallel session. See... so many people, right? Macam kat Malaysia jugak. Bila konferen menghampiri penghujung, audien makin nipis.

This is me with Tom Stewart. He is the chairman of the Ergonomics Society. He remembered that I attended the talk that he gave at Multimedia University.

These are the delegates, forced to go out of the building due to a fire alarm. Alas, it was a false alarm. But it did gave people time to enjoy the good weather outside.

Pakej Komputer

Bila macam2 dah dimasukkan ke laptop, mula la dia slow. Yg terbaru, installed Photoshop CS3.

So, selamat tinggal MS Office....
2) Google Chrome.
3) QSR NVivo 8. Ni untuk analisis data kuantitatif. Kena cari geran penyelidikan untuk beli perisian ni.
4) Mendeley. Refworks dan EndNote perisian berbayar. Mendeley yang percuma ni boleh menggantikan kedua2nya. So, why pay when you can get it for free?

Antaranya:
1) masukkan logo 'University of the Year 2008' atau logo sambutan 100 tahun penubuhan universiti.
2) tambahkan kontras alamat email.
3) perbaiki gambar.

Easter Trip 2009: Day one

Friday morning was the start of the trip that Asri and I had planned. Asri picked me up at home on the Chevrolet Matiz that we rented out from Enterprise the evening before. Our first destination was Oxford.

The drive to Oxford was nothing to shout about. It was cloudy, and rainy here and there. If anything, the trip TO Oxford seemed uneventful as the trip IN Oxford. We spent, or rather wasted, a lot of time trying to find a parking bay. As a city, Oxford is charming. In comparison, Cambridge is more charming. But perhaps the gloomy weather contributed to the negative assessment.

From Oxford, we drove to Salisbury, hoping to see Stonehenge in all its ancient glory. This time, the drive was pretty bad. The heavy aster traffic materialsed. About 4 miles from destination, we were held back by a slow moving traffic. We covered the final 4 miles in more than 4o minutes. It was pretty bad on fuel consumption, as we later realised. Without the crawling speed, we would had spent less than GMP80 for our five days journey.

Stonehenge itself was a bit of a disappointment. Asri was hoping for something more than a collection of arranged stone. No garden, no flower, no nothing. Felt a bit like people were circumumbulating an ancient site. Much like making tawaf around Kaabah, except without the religious connotation. In fact, the term 'tawaf' and 'rukun' became the catchphrases for this journey.

From Stonehenge, we drove straight to Cardiff, albeit with a 10 miles 'detour' thanks to the very insightful satnav. It was good for telling you the destination, but not the first few yards of the trip. Making a u-turn was rendered an impossibility due to the lingering heavy traffic. I managed to catch 40 winks on the leg to Cardiff. By then, the sun was out, and the warmth of the air was clearly felt.

Upon entering Cardiff, we went on a beautiful bridge. But the beauty, and its corresponding shorter trip time, came at a price. For the first time in the UK, I had to pay road toll. Fortunately, there wasn't many road tolls in the UK. In fact, the other toll that we had to pay was for using the tunnel into Liverpool.

Before going to the YHA, our overnight accomodation, we walked around Cardiff to take a view of the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff Castle, and the surrounding garding. After checking in and performing our solah, we went out again. We headed to Cardiff Bay upon the recommendation of out fellow YHA dorm mate, a guy originally from Cardiff.

The Bay is breathtaking. The developer managed to make the most of nature. It looked like a great combination of natural and commercial co-existence. It felt really 'happening'. But, of course, we could not partake in many of the offerings because they are not halal. The best bit on the visit to the Bay was perhaps the sunset. Simply magnificent.

We had dinner at a restaurant on City Road. There were a few halal restaurant. We chose the one that had the most customers. The portion of rice was too much. We should have shared. I did not managed to finish my lamb briyani.

On the way back to the YHA, we stopped by at a big masjid. It could have been a converted church. A few people were still in the masjid when we entered. It felt good to stop and pray at a masjid. It looked very much like a masjid, eventhough it was probably originally built as a church. To me, praying at the masjid made the perfect end for day one.

Jangan Bersidang

“We are not boycotting the assembly. We decided to gather at a hotel because we are very afraid,” he said at the hotel.

Exploration

I've been occupied by two useful websites I discovered in the past week.  On Geni, I can build and view my family tree. It is a great tool to explore. Now I can refresh, and have proper documentation of my ancestry. For example, now I can say that my father and mother shared the same ancestor: Bedul. My mother is in the lineage of Bedul's son, Mat Yen. My father is a descendent of Bedul's daughter, Teh Maimunah.

I have to rely on the elders' to look upward. I don't have much information about the great grandparents. By using this tool, I can collect and preserve the information. Looking downwards, I realise that I've not kept track of the development of my own and younger generations. I can't recall some of my cousin's names. My bad.

Mendeley share's Geni's interest in social networking. But, instead of blood lines, Mendeley is based on academic interest. For me, it is a rival to EndNote and RefWork. The main advantage is that it is free to download and use. Now I've started to make use of it. Hopefully, it will last long and help me being an excellant scholar.

tali gantung, kes tergantung

Arakian, dua orang mata2 didapati bersalah membunuh seorang wanita. Mereka dihukum gantung.

Package

I got this package last week. It didn't take long to be delivered after I placed my order. I didn't expect a box this size. When it was open, it revealed a cardboard cover.

I had to took out the cover from the box.

Then, I took a peek at what's inside.

It has a black box, with a black sleeve cover.

After taking off the sleeve, and opening the box, I found the object that I was looking for.

The moral of this story is, sometimes packaging can be deceptively 'big'. Just like 'economic stimulus package'. You'd hear that the package is $700 billion, or RM60 billion. But then, it is the value of the whole package. What do you get when you start to peel off the layers? Would you actually 'find' RM60 billion.

Bukan mengharap jatuh ke riba
menjadi manis kerana gula
ramai mengharap bantuan tiba
sudahlah tiris dikikis pula

Menjadi manis kerana gula
sagu kelapa dibuat hidang
sudahlah tiris dikikis pula

When it's cheaper to do it yourself

Last Sunday, I went to Maesham's car boot sales to find a microwave. I saw two, but both were not enticing enough. Instead, I bought something completely different. It wasn't a spur of the moment thing. I've given it a bit of a thought before. It is related to alteration works that I need to do on a number of the trousers that I've bought. An ads on the university website put the alteration service at £7 per pair of trousers. That's ain't cheap. So, when I saw this, the money-saving brain cells got re-activated. The asking price was £15. I asked for £10. The sellers were wiling to go down to £12. Then I showed more interest in the merchandise. I asked how it works, and where the bits and bobs are. On the second time of asking it for £10, the sellers relented. I was surprised that they did. I was actually ready to stand up and leave. But, when they said 'ok', I had to make good of my offer. So, now I own a very old Singer machine (with an electric motor). Last night, I did my first alteration work. It worked!

Rejection

Went to the NHS Research Ethics Committee meeting yesterday. The venue was King's Mill Hospital in Mansfield. Patrick went with me, and he proved to be a moral as well as decision support.

The meeting was supposed to start at 5.50. When we arrived, the committee was going through its agenda, and we were to be the first application reviewed that evening. Substantial time elapsed, filled with sipping a cup of cafe latte, before we were called in. The room had one big table, and the committee members sat around it. There were about 10 of them. Patrick and I completed the rectangular seating arrangement.

The questioning (which felt a bit like grilling) was over in 10 minutes. I had a feeling that some of the members did not go through my proposal in sufficient details. When it was over, we waited outside while the committee have further discussion.

The chairman came out a few minutes later, bearing a bad news. The committee could not agree with the way I'm seeking patient's informed consent. The application is rejected, and I would have to provide amendments, modification, and what nots to be reviewed by the same committee again.

My heart sank.

Then, I slowly raise my heart up again, reminding myself that I've got one big acceptance only one day before (the poem in Mingguan Malaysia). Furthermore, I can modify my study to remove the need to get patient's consent for observing the ECPs. In addition, I have some data that I can work on. I also prime the data collection process while waiting the ethics to get through.

Hopefully it will work out beautifully.

Thank you bro.

Lega? Yes. Happy? Yes.

Ihik ihik...

aliterasi

Masa form 4 & form 5 dulu, ambil subjek Sastera. Macam mana nak mengajar tema, plot, dsb kalau novel tak abis baca lagi?

Masa form 5 pulak, Cikgu Baei mengajar. Cikgu ni dulu pernah kerja profesion kewangan. Beralih ke profesion perguruan. Masa ujian, selalu skor. Alih2, masa SPM, dapat C4 je. Kaciwa.

Tu dia. Kan banyak pengulangan bunyi 'k'?

Hari ni terasa nak memandai - nak memanjangkan lagi frasa aliteratif tu. Boleh tak? 'Kukikis-kikis kuku kaki kiri kakak kekasihku'. Tergeliat lidah tak? Siti bernasib baik, sebab ada satu 'K' je. (sempat jugak mencelah tu...)
