Scoping Study

May 2008 was the month of scoping study.

Ride-out sessions at Coalville and Derby: 30 (April), 16, 24, 27
Sit-in sessions at EMAS Control room: 9, 22

The hours were long. I drove back home at around midnight from all three locations. This experience is something that I can look back and say, 'I've done it' with a big smile.

There will be a meeting with the Director of Operations to discuss further direction of my PhD project. It wont be until June, unfortunately. In the meantime, I'm supposed to come up with my research design.

Personal Changes, Global Concerns

Batu Puteh satu tempat
Satu nama meletak daulat
Jadi rebutan jiran yang dekat
Mungkin menunjuk siapa kuat

Untuk merebut masuk bicara
Beradu akal licik juara
Bila hakim putuskan suara
Batu Puteh ke Singapura

Batu Puteh satu alasan
Mudah untuk mengata jiran
Lembar sejarah jadi sandaran
Tunding musuh seberang sempadan

Tunding pula diri sendiri
Sejauh mana sanggup berdiri
Berlawan cerdik berhari-hari
Awas waspada kanan dan kiri

Menyokong Negara kerana sayang
Kuatkah diri menjadi tiang
Atau nipis seperti bayang
Sekali tiup terus bergoncang

Seketul batu mahu direbut
Dari tangan musuh disebut
Tawaran gunung tidak disambut
Rela mengutip sekecil siput

Gunung dimaksud bukan di peta
Melainkan tawaran dari Yang Esa
Bagi yang mahu mencari pahala
Ke baris hadapan berlumba-lumba

Adakah kita berada dalam Barisan Nasional, Barisan Rakyat, atau Barisan Belakang?

(This is a personal reflection about ICJ's decision, and after attending today's Jumaat prayer. I was asking myself, why is it that I often do not choose to pray at the front row?)

Poster: Printed

Just printed out the poster for the competition tomorrow. I like the quality of the print out. I might print other posters (art?) at the same place again. Hmmm.. here again, I'm wishing that I have a DSLR. It would be nice to have personalised posters at home.

Healthier Option

One good thing about living in the UK is being able to temporarily ‘escape’ from the ‘sinful’ Malaysian food. I can make a choice to put healthier things in my mouth.

I bought a juicer from a car boot sales in Quorn a week ago. Ever since, almost everyday, I made myself fruit juices. Now it is easier for me to get more portions of fruits into my daily diet. The price of fruits and vegetables also helps. A kilogram of carrot can be al low as 70 pence. Celery stalks are at 99 pence each. Oranges are also quite cheap. £3.00 worth of fruits and vege can last a whole week.

So far, these are the mixes that I’ve tried.

1) Carrot + evaporated milk
2) Carrot + Grapefruit
3) Orange + Celery
4) Orange + Carrot + Celery + Apple
5) Orange + Carrot + Celery + Strawberry + Green grapes

Here’s what I want to try later.

1) Apple + Peach + lemonade
2) Carrot + Tomato + lemon + honey
3) Strawberry + Mango
4) Apple + Black Grapes

And, this morning, I tried oat porridge. Not too bad

Kembali

Date with Nurse

Today, after Jumaat prayer, insyaAllah I will go out with a nurse again. I went out with him before, and this will be my second time with him. His shift is going to end at 1am. A very long day indeed for me.

And the day has definitely grow longer now. Magrib time is about 9pm. Isya' is around 11pm, and fajar is at 3am (some argue that fajr is around 1 am). It seems ridiculous at how short the night is.

On a positive note, this is the time to have qiyamullail. You can stay awake the whole night! In fact, it is highly possible to perform fajr prayer with your maghrib wudhu'.

So, my session with the nurse today will be till the wee hours in the morning. By the time I get home, I can prepare to pray fajr. This kind of experience is something that just cannot simply be bought.

Pantun: Mencari Tema

Air di kolam nampak rata
Di cucur atap air menitik
Hati di dalam meronta-ronta
Ingin menatap wajah adik

Panjang rupanya seberang titi
Belum dicuba elokkah lantainya
Lama rasanya abang menanti
Adik tiba bilakah masanya

Bila memakai kain batik
Paras yang cantik semakin ayu
Bila mendengar suara adik
Hati yang rindu menjadi sayu

Rotan apa tidak berduri
Payah pula untuk diregang
Tangan hamba tidak berjari
Hati tuan tak dapat dipegang

Gunung tinggi hendak ditawan
Kaki tersadung melangkah perdu
Mengharap hujan dikandung awan
Pipi basah menanggung rindu

Ke jeram mencari sunyi
Ke laut mencari tenang
Kasih dicari mana sembunyi
Hanya memeluk si bayang-bayang

Apa guna berladang sirih
Tidak berpinang tidak berpuan
Apa guna menjunjung kasih
Tangan menepuk tiada sambutan

Patah kayu dinding perigi
Langsung roboh tidak terganti
Kasih layu tak kembang lagi
Tiadalah harum jambangan hati

Kelip kelip kusangka api
Kalau api mana baranya
Kasih pudar kusangka mati
Kalau mati mana kuburnya

Date with Nurses

I went to EMAS HQ last Friday for a session with a Nurse in the Control Room. The Nurse assigned to me was ill, so I got to observe a couple of other Nurses. The 7pm to 12am shift was interesting and beneficial. As an observer, I was allowed to see how they take and make calls to people requiring ambulance services.

One obvious benefit from the date is getting confused. I tried to map the flow of information that from a 999 call to the Emergency Care Practitioner (ECP). But I wasn't satisfied with what I have. I now have more questions than when I start. Additionally, I was overwhelmed by the different systems, titles/positions, and possible scenarios. So, a second sit in would help me to clarify a few things.I spoke to the Control Room manager and mentioned to her that I want to come again. She said it would be fine.

Confusion asides, I have a better understanding of the 'other side' of the ECP work. If the systems works as it should be, then the ECPs would have a lesser (mental) workload in terms of making decision about the severity of the patients' condition.

Backyard Pictures

It seems that there ARE limits to the number of pictures that I can show at Flickr. So, I'll be posting more pictures here instead of there. These flowers are at the back of my current house.

Poster Competition

There will be a poster competition at the Department next Wednesday (21 May). I've prepared a poster for it. Here's the draft. The pic quality is not good. I will convert the final version to a PDF for this blog.

Selamat Hari Jadi

Aqil Marwan sayang,

Selamat Hari Jadi.

May Allah bless you with great intelligence, and a dignified character befitting the names I've chosen for you. May He provide you strength and support for your physical, spiritual, emotional, and social development; He is the Provider of all things. May He protects you from ignorance, hatred, envy, and ill-scheme.

This Intangible Inheritance is my present for you to keep, and hopefully treasure for years to come. I present myself to you, so that you know me better. I pray that Allah gives us the time and opportunity to unwrap this gift together, for there are so many things that we can talk about.

May Allah accept my jihad for leaving you behind. And may He reward both of us with the best of reunion.

Happy Birthday my son.

Degil

kalau nak degil, degillah
memang itulah namanya degil
buat apa saja yg kau mahu
kedegilan itu kuasa penggerakmu

tapi
kalau nak degil
boleh tak degil yang tak berkaitan dengan aku?
sebab aku pun degil juga tau!

jadi
kau degillah dengan sesiapapun
bila-bila masapun
di mana-manapun
aku tak berminat jaga tepi kainmu
cuma jangan masukkan aku
dalam persamaan kuadratik kedegilanmu

kalau kau degil jugak
jangan kecil hati
kalau aku mengkuasaduakan kedegilanku
atau nanti
aku lari jauh
dari radius capaianmu

HEPSU Presentation

The bi-weekly lab meeting is finished. Today, it was extra special because I was asked to present my project progress. The reactions that I got was positive. Sue said my presentation set a high standard. And she asked me to circulate my PowerPoint slides to everyone in the lab. I can share with you, but I don't know how. If anyone knows how I can upload a PP file to my blog, please let me know.

Oh, another thing; I got a date with a nurse tonight. ;-)

Meeting Einstein and Napoleon

My housemate and I went to Birmingham yesterday. Another housemate initially wanted to go, but he decided to spend more time on bed when I was all ready to go. So, I drove to the Birmingham Museum and Gallery in the misty and rainy morning with Faiz on my left. In the car, I discovered that he is actually one year older than I. All this while, I thought he was 7 years my junior. That dicovery put things in a new perspectives.

But, the more interesting perspectives came on later that day when we were at the museum. We arrived early, so we had time to explore the viccinity. We spent a lot of time behind and in front of our respective mobile camera. And we can use the camera in the museum too. Otherwise, I wouldn't be able to share with you me meeting Einstein and Napoleon.

I will try to upload other pictures from Birmingham, and also Nottingham (Saturday trip), on flickr. You see, I've put some significant mileage to the BMW.

BMW 316i

Alhamdulillah, finally I got my first BMW. (ermm... the first of many more, I hope :-) )

Tuesday evening, a friend and I went to pick up the car at the garage in Leicester. I purchased the insurance policy online at a nearby internet cafe. Then I drove home with it.

I've promised a friend in Japan to take pictures of the car. But, due to unexpected fieldwork the following afternoon, I did not have time to do a proper job. So, here's some photos of my new (old) car.

Profile view. it's a hatchback. Notice the short rear. The petrol flap is also visible here. When I first filled up the car with petrol, the price was £109.9 per litre, almost RM7.

Side-rear view. I also have my eyes on the car on the right, at the other side of the road. Its an Audi TT. Very nice.
