How much responsibilities do the nurses assume for patients' safety?

Patient safety is a big topic in ergonomics. In a recent Annual Conference of the Ergonomics Society (UK), Professor Peter Buckle mentioned that PS is a huge field where ergonomists can do a lot of works.

Sue mentioned in a meeting recently that the design of hospital wards in the USA and UK are different. One point that interest me was the appointment of 'patient sitters' in the USA. They are hired to monitor the patients. Supposedly, this can reduce cases of patients falling, slipping, etc. Thus, in this environment, the hospital is taking responsibility by appointing personnel to ensure patient safety.

What about in Malaysia? Given that family members regularly accompany patients in wards, do the responsibility of ensuring patient safety shifted from the nurses to the family members? This is an interesting question to follow up.

Methods to answer this question include semi-structured interview, focus group discussion, and survey. Any takers among psychology students? Or future post-grads?
