Why do people forward chain mails?

Based on a personal experience recently, I ask myself this question. I believe it can be transformed into a worthwhile research question.

An in-depth interview could be carried out to discover the factors affecting the decision to forward or stop the distribution of chain mails. The investigation should include people from different religious and educational background. 

A theory or model of compliance can be used to guide the investigation. Thus, a social psychology perspective can be used in this research.

The output from the research can be used to inform interventions for stopping chain mails.
