Peluang vs kesempatan

I was chatting with Ray the other day when the subject of peluang vs kesempatan came up. Semantically, they may mean more or less the same. However, in application, they can be vastly different thing. The moral, financial and social connotations are distinguishable.

Some people say that 'good luck' is simply preparation meeting opportunity. In this sense, taking a 'peluang' is something very positive. In fact, it should be encouraged. Otherwise, all those preparation would go to naught. Sometimes, people are hesitant to take the opportunity for fear of 'succeeding'. Quite an ironic fear. Success brings one into an unchartered territory. 'Failure' or 'status quo' are more familiar, thus less threathening. So, no wonder people who takes opportunities tend to be revered as heroic. Not everybody would be willing to stare success squarely. You'd have to be brave to dare to succeed.

More important, we must be well prepared. Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to do anything once an opportunity presents itself. We'd let the good things pass us by. That would be unfortunate, or bad luck, indeed.

On the other hand, taking a 'kesempatan' is like conning into grabbing an potentially beneficial situation without plans or well made intentions. More often than not, 'kesempatan' is taken at the expanse of another person. Your gain is another person's loss. In contrast, taking an opportunity is more likely to be a win-win situation. So, better be prepared to reap mutual benefits.
